Katakthonia™

Katakthonia™ is a contemporary formation coined for this project from the ancient Greek roots kata (κατά), “downward/through,” and chthonia (from χθόνιος / χθών), “of the earth” or “of the underworld.” It names a ritual‑archival practice of mythic descent into the deep layers of Greek cosmology — the world beneath the city, beneath Olympus, beneath the surface of reason.Katakthonia™ comes from two ancient Greek roots: kata (κατά), meaning “downward” or “through,” and chthonia (from χθόνιος / χθών), meaning “of the earth” or “of the underworld.” It names a mythic descent into the deep layers of Greek cosmology — the world beneath the city, beneath Olympus, beneath the surface of reason. This is the terrain of Hekate, Persephone, Hades, and the many spirits and rites that dwell in shadow and silence. Katakthonia draws on chthonic practice — burial, invocation, boundary‑crossing, and memory — to designate a ritual‑archival movement into the underlayer, where the sacred is raw, rooted, and alive. A contemporary formation built from ancient language, Katakthonia names a way of going down: into myth, into memory, into meaning.
